Entry # 11: Final Reflection

This course represents very much because certainly has been a goal to end the English college and continue learning independently. Regarding the course was a great experience because the atmosphere was very good, partners were very participative and the teacher has a way of teaching adapted to the student.

I liked different activities that contribute quite for example this blog where we can keep the items online and are more dynamic. Addition to the talks between partners on various topics from everyday life to practice.

The added value of this course was to acquire vocabulary and practice the language with confidence. I hope soon speak more fluently.

UNREAL PAST

WISH OR IF ONLY

Wish and ‘If only’ are both used to talk about regrets.  things that we would like to change either about the past or the present.

Talking about the present

  • If only I didn’t have so much homework I could go to the concert tonight. She has a lot of homework and she can’t go to the concert.
  • I wish you didn’t live so far away.
  • I wish I knew what to do.

ITS HIGHT TIME

It's (high) time + past subjunctive expresses that something should be done and that it is already a bit late:

  • It's time you went to bed. You'll have to get up early tomorrow.
  • When we say that the right time has arrived for something and we are still in time, we can use the following patterns:
  • It's time (for you) to go to bed.

WOULD RATHER

Would rather is used to express a preference in English. Would rather is the same in meaning as would prefer. These two phrases are used interchangeably to express a preference when making a choice. Here are some examples of short conversations that use would rather to either state or ask for a preference.

Structure

The form would rather is a little strange because 'rather' is not a verb but is part of an expression that means 'would prefer to'. 'Rather' is usually immediately followed by averb in base form (verb without 'to'). It's common to use would rather in the shortened 'd rather form in positive statements. All subjects take 'would rather'.Would rather can be used to refer to the present moment or a future moment in time.

WHAT IF OR SUPPOSE

We use "suppose that", "supposing that" and "what if" to talk abot the imaginary situations. We just imagine the opposite of the current situation and want to guess or learn possible results of this imaginary situation.

  • Suppose that you failed the test, what would you do then?
  • Suppose that hadn't bought that car, what else would you have done with your money?
  • Suppose we miss the train - what will we do then?
  • Supposing that I lost all the money, what would you do?

Entry # 9: Essay 3

I would choose the era where there was independence in Costa Rica, when there were human rights for women. I don’t know different situations that would warrant my intervention and I could do more for my country. It is I have always wanted to be part of history and leave a legacy.

I have always wanted to fight for people and justice do something good and it is in the history where my children can see this contribution a help in the life of other people. In any field I don’t care because all people have the capacity to do things that they have not imagined.

For my reading an article about Juan Santamaria or other people in Costa Rica that they did something important in the field of politics for example or when there was not a law to fortify the country, it is very important in the future I went to be a person not important but that contributed.

"PRACTICE MADE THE MASTER"

On life the practice is important for everything and you can be expert in fields that you not imagine. But do you need everyday preferably practice and practice because is imposible learn without studying.

I understand that is difficult because everybody has labor obligations and personals. The time is little and the people has your priorities, but for learn english is necessary. In my case, I am trying of practice with my friends more close on messages text, chats, mesenger and any verbal and oral communication.

Is funny and you can learn more vocabulary and remove the fear for talking in public or with other people.

RELATIVE CLAUSES (DEFINING AND NON-DEFINING)

This topic is not very dificult, but for me the part that I confuse is when you need change the parts of the sentence without change the meaning. Por example in the exercises when there two sentences similar and need search the mistake.

The answer correct is to step or put a word in other position, I mean, change the meaning of the sentences or the people does not understand that you said.

Defining relative clauses

It is the clause that identify a person, thing, animal etc and can not deleted, because could change the meaning complete and in your structure can we use that instead of who or which.

Non defining relative clauses

It is a clause that you put or add information additional and in this case can be delete without affect the meaning of the sentence. Use commas and is very easy of identify.

Entry # 6: Essay 2

I am talking about all inventions and discoveries that the text exposes the advantages and risks that I think may happen . It is important to write about it because tecnology is not always positive thoug people think that yes. Also it has its advantages obviously that are a lot and in this article I am writing about it.

First space travel or exploration where were discovered a lot of things that are beneficious for the human race and explore other planets in search for more information about the origin and its structure. But its not always succesful because is achieved the objective and are spent billions of dollars for sending astronaut to space. Additionally the part of logistics and time invested in the investigation.

Second robots are another invention by scientists that contribute to our facilities. The sick or old people are benefited because in some countrys help this type of population with their basic needs. However it is not cheap its construction and is spent a lot of money, but not always the results are positive.

Third, genetic engineering is another important discovery that help and have the posibility of cloning. In this moment in animals even though it is not sure that in humans is being used. Also it is expensive and it not sucessful always and for me it is abnormal because its manipulating humans to explore and put the life at risk.

In conclusion this is a very important topic where the tecnology advances everyday and more inventions come to society. It can be positive or negative, I dont know but we need to be prepared for everything and help or contribute with tecnology and the disposition of investigation.

MUSIC

The music is other option for me, because helps improve the english and of course develop the ear. Thanks to music we can learn English quickly and funny. It's simple, just have to listen to our favorite songs in English and pay attention to those expressions do not know. It is also very useful to translate the songs to know the meaning of the vocabulary of the entire song.

On the other hand is important the speed of the pronunciation, I need stay ready and pay attention for understand.

Examples:
  • Hoobastank - The Reason
  • Vertical Horizont - Everything you want
In the next link I leave a song that could help. It is easy to listen and go slowly.

FUTURE PROBABILITY AND MODAL VERBS

This topic is very interesting for me because before I had understood that "will" is always used to refer to action in future. However, with practice, the active book and other sources I can see other words are used to refer to the same thing but have less chance of being realized.

Por example:

Use will when you talk about something that is denitive or with high probability to do.
Use could, might or may to talk about something possible but not definitive.

This are some resources or links where you can review and practice about this topic.

READING

For me is important the reading because you can see the verbals times and in this case identify past tenses or if there gerunds or infinitives. It is more easy that you read and understand the structure. In change, if you listen and you dont understand the grammar is very dificult know the verbal time.

In the next video you can see differents advantages of the reading and you can put in practice for learning english:

Entry # 4: Section 4 - Grammar

PAST TENSES

In my case this a topic a little dificult because I need identify the action and later the past tense that it subdivide in:

Simple past: describe the actions finished in past at order chronological.
Past continuos: describe actions in progress when something else happened.
Past perfect: describe actions complete before other events obviously in the past.
Past perfect continuos: describe actions that already in progress before the main events happened.

It is not easy, but there that pay attention in the form of sentences and the time in the past of this.

In the next link you can ubicate and see examples of the topic:

MOVIES

For me one form to learn or that I am trying apply always is watch the movies in english. Also are tools to help learn and listen in english or in this case on some phrases that help us remember grammar. As a first step is important read the subtitles in spanish and later en english  so as to learn and also observe some rules or short phrases that simplify the language. If you feeling more secure, the idea is remove the subtitles, pay attention and listen the pronunciation.

This are some resources or links where you can review and practice about this topic.

For example, here I leave you a link to trailer of my favorite movie with subtitles. I hope it serves in some form.

VERBS AND ADJECTIVES WITH PREPOSITIONS

Regarding to this topic is dificult because I wanted understand if there was a rule exactly for the conjugations. For example verb or adjective more preposition which were used with these prepositions, but I was reviewing and need it to learn the combinations for that can apply them to the sentences or what is I mean when you are talking. Is interesant because when you want said something like spanish is dificult, because in english is more short in some expresions and more easy too.

Examples:

Verb + preposition: succeed in, rely on

Adjetive + preposition: lacking in, nervous about

This are some resources or links where you can review and practice about this topic.
